Alan Trench


Very few businesses we deal with operate at a purely local level. Even if they only serve local customers, their supply chain, talent pool and competitors inevitably transcend borders. With technology connecting people and markets around the world at a greater rate than ever, it’s essential to take a global view.

For Alan Trench, that’s a perspective that comes naturally. Growing up in Argentina, Alan’s passion was reading stories about great explorers. As the Oil and Gas Practice Leader, he follows in their footsteps, and has so far visited over 50 countries - wearing out more than a few passports in the process.

Alan’s work in the energy, mining and basic material industries has taken him to Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Western Europe and several countries across the Americas. Before joining Partners in Performance, he worked for oilfield services giant Schlumberger, oil and gas multinational TOTAL and McKinsey & Company.

When he’s lucky enough to be home, Alan unwinds on the squash court and spends time with his wife and active boys.

Career snapshot

  • Applied the ROCx methodology to a gold mining client to increase project NPV by $26m (a 165% increase) through an 18% reduction of addressable Capex, a 14% increase of ounces produced, and an 11% reduction of Opex.
  • Evaluated options for increasing the value of stranded natural gas reserves, resulting in the construction of a $150m LPG extraction plant. Negotiated contract terms with commercial off-takers, and supported negotiation by engineering providers.
  • Restructured the supply chain function (organisational structure, processes, practices and supply contracts) to support a $20bn p.a. Capex programme in oil and gas.
  • Structured the exploration and development activities on natural gas fields for an integrated utility company. Developed an exploration programme worth $500m over five years and supported its implementation.
  • Improved operations of a railroad company, boosting EBITDA by 133%.
  • Designed a pipeline gathering and export system for offshore natural gas, dealing with technical and business considerations, e.g., pipe size, metallurgy, capacity and prioritisation of consumption segments to support a 150% growth in production by 2020.
  • Devised and executed an M&A strategy, selecting targets for international expansion in a $5bn investment programme. Negotiated off-take conditions with clients and financial terms with banks.
