Carsten Heide


Carsten is a Director and thought partner to mining executives in strategic planning, business transformation, technology, and performance management with over 20 years of experience. He achieved bottom-line operational improvements for mining clients with a combined value of approximately $1bn, improved the construction of capital projects by approximately $0.5 bn, and increased their NPV by over $3 bn.

Prior to joining Partners in Performance, Carsten worked at The Boston Consulting Group and served as a Director at the Energy and Environmental Research Center where he held profit and loss responsibility for technology commercialisation and investment activities.

Carsten has worked and led client engagements across the Americas, Europe, CIS, Middle East, Australia, and China. He holds a Ph.D. in Physics from Oxford University.

Career snapshot

  • Open-pit mining: Led a long-term business improvement engagement, improving productivity by 700ktpa and reducing cost by $3 per tonne. This included improvements along the entire value chain.
  • Mining technology: Delivered technology strategy and implementation roadmap including change management approach for global mining company identifying $1bn in potential improvements.
  • Project optimisation: Delivered NPV improvement opportunities at over 10 capital management programs of several hundred million dollars each. Led development of a right-sizing and scoping study process and evaluated attractiveness of multiple options, including flow sheet and resource plans. Maintained KPIs and project financials, working with both the owner’s team and EPCM.
  • Coal beneficiation: Developed intellectual property portfolio for lignite beneficiation technologies. In addition, worked on the development of coal liquefaction technologies and emission controls.
  • Coal research: Had profit and loss for technology commercialisation. Managed investor and board member expectations. Developed and managed a portfolio of over 50 energy technologies and numerous company investments while leading cross-functional teams of engineering, business, and legal professionals.


Carsten has a PhD in Physics from the University of Oxford, England. He is a Certified Licensing Professional™ (CLP), accredited by the Licensing Executive Society. Carsten is fluent in English, German, and Russian.
