Juan F. Ferrara


Growing up and being educated between two different countries is an eye-opening way to live. Having the opportunity to experience very different cultures, and adapt to each, can be a gift to a young mind. Juan Ferrara understands what this is like, spending his time as a child between Mexico and the United States.

As a former Chief Information Officer at McKinsey & Company and with over 20 years’ experience as a consultant, Juan’s expertise in digital, technology, and line management is vast. With opportunities to travel around America, Mexico, Canada, Brazil, wider Latin America, and Europe, Juan has seen positive changes to companies in the digital, IT, mining, financial services, media, and consumer goods industries. He now heads the Partners in Performance Mexico practice and is a key leader in our Digital practice.

Juan spends his spare time improving his golf game by getting his handicap into single digits. He is all about his family, its history, and finding a way to connect the two. By researching his family tree, Juan has been able to get insights into his heritage, dating back to the 1500s. He and his wife have four adult children and Juan is proud to share his discoveries with them.

Career snapshot

  • Developed a negotiating strategy and made contractual improvements for construction projects worth approximately $100m, and implemented operational improvements aimed at generating $15m in savings at a large, integrated zinc and lead smelter and refinery complex
  • Led an effort to increase zinc, lead, and silver production levels from 10% to 15% by systematically improving operating disciplines from planning all the way through to blasting and material movement, including debottlenecking maintenance to improve the overall availability of mobile equipment
  • Developed a programme for a diversified industrial group to restructure its major business units through a series of engagements and cost reduction initiatives, with over 25% savings achieved
  • Reduced costs by 25% and redesigned key processes at a major bank
  • Developed a back-office and operations benchmarking initiative to identify transformation and strategic opportunities for banks in Latin America
  • Developed strategic options for the outsourcing of an IT legacy platform for a direct-to-consumer retailer with over $1bn in sales, identifying the risks and developing key negotiation terms for a $100m-plus contract
  • Defined business unit strategies for a leading insurance company for automobile, life, health, pension, property, and casualty business units. Identified key success factors, profitable segments, growth, and market-entry opportunities, as well as distribution channel strategies
  • Led public sector studies in Mexico in the steel and telecommunications industries, which resulted in the privatisation of a steel company and a new telecommunications law
