Tom Sonnen


Tom helped build the Procurement practice and is now driving our South East Asian business in Singapore. He has over 20 years of deep cost reduction and business improvement expertise. Tom worked as a Consultant for Mitchell Madison Group and Accenture previously. He also co-founded his own firm, CLM Partners, before deciding to join Partners in Performance. Tom has spearheaded the cost-cutting efforts of many Fortune 1000 companies, across the manufacturing, infrastructure, logistics, and mining industries.

With a large family that includes his wife and four kids, Tom prides himself on being able to provide them with a global education and hopes to live in more countries around the world to continue exploring different cultures.

Career snapshot

  • Identified and delivered savings of $21m through low-cost country sourcing, rapid sourcing, strategic sourcing and continuous improvement for a brown coal mine and power plant.
  • Led cost reduction effort in a Papua New Guinea gold mine, achieving $31m savings across fuel, MRO, tyres and reagents using a hyper-competition toolkit and leveraging a truly global supplier base. Savings exceeded the stretch target by 25%.
  • Implemented a comprehensive waste reduction programme for largest Australian/Pacific in-flight caterer, reorganised the production flow and storage facilities to improve efficiency and minimise food waste, saving more than $4m in Cost of Goods Sold.
  • Led turnaround team at a chemicals plant after closure by the Environmental Protection Agency. Put wiring in place across all functional areas and developed a sustainable ideas pipeline worth over $32m.
  • Implemented $19m in annualised savings at an oil and gas company. Reorganised procurement function into category management teams and implemented rigorous annual planning process.
  • Conducted sourcing opportunity assessment and supported overall viability analysis of a remote fertiliser manufacturing site in Queensland, identifying $35m in potential savings.
  • Developed a comprehensive procurement strategy and organisational design effort for one of New Zealand’s largest power generators. Identified savings opportunity of up to $22m.
  • Led a team that implemented $24m annualised savings across an open-pit mine: setting up labour panels and negotiating a $120m contract.
  • Achieved average post merger integration savings of 35% across addressed sourcing categories at an architecture and engineering firm.
  • Realised 32% post-merger run-rate savings on sourceable baseline of $50m for a Fortune 1000 commercial real estate company.
  • Conducted due diligence and developed offshoring strategy for a medium-sized, private equity-owned manufacturer in the hotel amenities business.
  • Reduced technical maintenance costs by 24% at a Fortune 100 electronics company.
  • Achieved savings of 23% on a total baseline of over US$300m for a Fortune 100 conglomerate 


Tom holds a BSc. in Economics (Honours) from University College London, UK and completed his MPhil. in Management Studies at the Judge Institute of Management Studies, Cambridge University, UK. Tom is fluent in English and German as well as proficient in French, Dutch and Czech.
