Dimitri Spiliotis

Introduction

Dimitri has 18 years of experience in operational improvement and line management, including three years as a consultant with the Boston Consulting Group. He has worked across many industries, including mining, pulp and paper, plasterboard and venture capital. Prior to joining Partners in Performance, Dimitri spent six years as the General Manager of plasterboard liner activity for Lafarge Gypsum, and three years in various marketing, strategy and logistics roles for Lafarge’s Australian plasterboard business. He has lived in the US, France, the UK, Australia, and Chile and has worked extensively in Mexico and Sweden. His interests include travel and playing soccer.

Career snapshot

  • Sales Force Effectiveness for a Latin American media company. Reorganised the structure of a television sales force, achieving 10% savings in the process. Introduced a new key account planning process and improved the sales force’s incentive scheme.
  • Construction productivity for a $9bn petrochemical plant in the US. Improved concrete pour rate by 24% in four weeks by improving the front-line supervision of the rebar crews. Established a project 'War room' which was used daily by key construction managers, and identified opportunities to accelerate the schedule through critical path workshops.
  • Capital optimisation for a $3bn copper and nickel mine in the US. Reduced expected Capex by $200m and increased NPV by $700m for a greenfield copper and nickel mine and processing plant.
  • Underground zinc mine business improvement. Improved availability of mobile equipment (site bottleneck) by 35% at underground zinc mine by establishing, and adhering to, a regular preventative maintenance plan. Reorganised storage of air filters and implemented new procedures for ensuring replacement.
  • Rapid Sourcing, open-pit and underground gold mines. $20m-plus of cost reduction for chemicals, spare parts, consumables and labour spend agreed/negotiated with suppliers over a period of three months for three mines in Mexico and Central America.
  • Copper concentrate plant, business improvement. Achieved $10m of productivity improvement at a site in Chile, with an additional $10m in the implementation phase at end of project. Efforts focused on improving planned shutdowns, reducing belt downtime, and optimising feed to the SAG mill. Coached and developed new business improvement team.
  • Transport cost reduction, copper/nickel mine. Identified savings of 15% on an ore/fill haulage and handling contract for a Cu/Ni mine and mill and prepared client for renegotiation. Built a model of supplier costs, analysed index-related price adjustment formulas, and optimised routes.
  • Swedish paper mill, site closure. Saved over €10m (approximately 30%) compared to plan during the closure of the mill by maximising the resale of equipment, renegotiating long-term contracts, and optimising the land clean-up process (sourced from various specialised contractors during clean-up).
  • Industrial paper purchasing. Responsible for €30m of annual paper purchases for a plasterboard manufacturer. Trained new suppliers on the technical specs of the product, switched volumes between existing suppliers to optimise costs, and improved usage (consumption) ratios.
