Rick Hodgson


Rick has five years’ experience in operational improvement, strategy, turnarounds, cost reduction, commercial due diligence, and construction productivity. This work has seen him perform diagnostics and engagements across capital projects, mining operations, energy (upstream and downstream), offshore shared service centres, FMCG, transportation, pulp and paper, and chemicals. Prior to joining Partners in Performance, Rick gained valuable experience at high profile organisations, JBWere, Nomura, KPMG and KordaMentha. Since joining, Rick has worked across the UK, France, Portugal, Australia, New Zealand, Philippines, Malaysia and Papua New Guinea.

To keep his busy life in balance, Rick stays active through football, basketball and spending time at the gym. Getting outdoors is also important to Rick, where you might find him trekking trails, or immersing himself in festivals.

  • Capital project recovery: Partnered with the owner of a £1bn capital project as their trusted execution specialist, to drive acceleration in multiple packages, across installation and commissioning
  • Pulp and paper market entry: Developed a Board recommendation paper to evaluate a new market entry decision
  • Downstream energy five-year strategy: Developed a robust five-year strategy for a large downstream petroleum business, across each main business division
  • Downstream energy post-merger integration: Identified NZ$40m in synergistic benefits through integrating two downstream energy players in eight weeks
  • Oil and Gas organisational restructure: Identified US$250m in labour cost reduction through company-wide organisational restructure in six weeks
  • Mining performance improvement: Delivered 21% improvement in mining unit cost at an Australian-based iron ore mine
  • Unconventional Oil and Gas performance improvement: Delivered $250m in both throughput and cost reduction as part of company-wide transformation from project-phase to steady-state operations
  • Transportation cost reduction: Delivered $15m in sustained operating cost reduction, across maintenance and service delivery
  • Mining cost reduction diagnostic: Identified a potential 18% improvement opportunity in unit all-in sustaining cost through cost levers
  • Energy vendor due diligence: Critically assessed the robustness of the 'Life of Mine' plan and proposed improvements, including adequacy of coal reserves, forecast supply to power station, production crew configuration, equipment schedule, capital plan and mitigation of key risk
  • FMCG maintenance: Identified $4m of short term, implementable opportunities in the repairs and maintenance department of a wholesale food manufacturer
  • Mining procurement: Identified $22m in sourcing opportunities across 14 categories
  • Gold mine turnaround: Identified 50% unit cash cost reduction for a gold mining asset in South East Asia
  • Gold mine operational improvement: Identified $100m of throughput and cost reduction opportunities for a large gold mining operator in South East Asia
  • Offshore Banking IT Operations: Achieved significant results in the IT operations division of a global investment bank
  • CSG well site construction productivity: Achieved significant results in coal seam gas well-site construction
  • Shared services: Identified optimised shared services structure of a chemicals, energy and fertilisers client with multiple business units, along with further cost savings equal to $7m


Master of Finance from the University of Melbourne and a Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) from the University of Melbourne, where he was also awarded the University of Melbourne Global Mobility Grant for work undertaken for a consulting project in Shanghai for the Bank of New York Mellon.
