Tom Algie

Introduction

Tom has over 10 years’ experience in research, strategy and operational improvement consulting, and line roles, within Australia and abroad. He has delivered over 20 consulting engagements with more than $200m in bottom-line value delivered. He has worked across several industries, including mining (gold, iron ore and coal), gold processing, airlines, retail, manufacturing, shipping, telecommunications, oil, and gas (conventional and unconventional) and construction. Prior to joining Partners in Performance, Tom completed a Ph.D. in earthquake engineering. He has worked in Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and the United States.

  • Gold mining, operational improvement: Identified $40M of production and cost improvement opportunities on a gold and copper mine
  • Airlines, strategy development and corporate KPIs: Developed strategic plans, value driver trees, KPIs and targets for all General Managers reporting into the Chief Operating Officer
  • Retail, value chain strategy: Conducted a strategic assessment of a major retail chain store network, identifying $50m of cost synergies across the distribution channels and initiatives to improve the profitability of the remote stores
  • Manufacturing, strategic transformation: Generated and implemented over $100m of savings in a business transformation effort at an international manufacturer, including over $60m in labour savings
  • Telecommunications, strategic growth assessment: Conducted a strategic assessment of organisational capability to meet growth targets, coached the client improvement team to ensure sustainable implementation
  • Coal seam gas, market due diligence: Identified potential acquisitions, particularly within the services industry, based on growth and risk profiles for a Private Equity firm
  • Oil and Gas, strategic optimisation of capital spend: Performed rapid reduction of capital spend on a $2bn oil plant development, improved NPV significantly to ensure funding for the project could be secured
  • Telecommunications, project management coaching: Conducted a nationwide coaching programme to ensure a telecommunications company had the skill level required for the rollout of a major telecommunications network
  • Manufacturing, sales force effectiveness: Increased sales by 10% in a national sales team for a mining supplier manufacturer
  • Iron ore mine, construction productivity: Implemented simple tools to help management gain visibility and prioritisation across the owner, contractor and service companies in all areas on a $2.4bm iron ore mine construction
  • Minerals processing, operational improvement: Standardised work practices for plant workers on a coal handling and processing plant

Education

Tom has a Ph.D. in earthquake engineering from the University of Auckland. He researched building and bridge foundations in New Zealand and in the United States on a Fulbright Scholarship.
